Residents speak out about potential cuts to Social Security and Medicaid at the Chemung Co. Legislature Meeting

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Some residents in Chemung County are urging lawmakers to oppose potential Social Security and Medicaid cuts. Several people spoke out at the Chemung County Legislature meeting Monday night, asking leaders to take action.
"Your words matter, and that's what residents in Chemung County are asking for from this body. Words of advocacy," said Andy Patros, a former Chemung County Legislator.
For the second month in a row, several residents took to the county chambers. They say their concerns range from possible cuts to federal programs, to the status of the only Social Security Office in Chemung County. They say they also worry about elected leader's support of these cuts.
"If we want to keep our communities safe, we need to help keep them healthy," said one woman. "So, if we can do resolutions about the HALT Act, and we can fight about Medicaid, and we can fight about NYSEG and all the other things, there's no reason we can't get a resolution out there to explain to them the importance of protecting the most vulnerable."
"Nearly 36% of our county's population could be directly impacted by these cuts. That includes our elderly, our disabled, our children, our working class families who rely on Medicaid for basic health care, and essential services. This is not theoretical, this is Chemung County," said one man.
Chairman Mark Margeson says the legislature has been in touch with several state official's offices, including Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Langworthy. He says a resolution will be considered.
"There will be consideration for that, but that's something we need to do a little bit more research on, because it says the potential of Medicaid, medicare and Social Security cuts. It hasn't said that there are going to be cuts," said Margeson. "So a number of the legislators have said you know, listen, we don't know if there's going to be cuts. So we'll have some discussion about it and the resolution that was brought to us. It will have some consideration, and we'll take a look at it and see if it makes sense."
The legislature voted to pass a resolution urging Governor Kathy Hochul to repeal the HALT Act. The resolution says the law is making prisons more dangerous for everyone. The legislature also voted to urge officials to repeal the Raise the Age Law, and reform bail laws.
