People Pack Squatch Den Records for 2025 Record Store Day

HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- April 12th, 2025, is Record Store Day, a day to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding almost 1,400 independently-owned record stores in the U.S., and thousands of similar stores internationally. At the Squatch Den Records in Horseheads, people packed the store to grab new vinyls, CDs, and posters.
"Record Store Day is the biggest day of the year for independent record stores like ourselves. They put out hundreds of drops that are exclusive to independent record stores, so you can't find these at bigger box stores... You have to come to an independent record store," said Ash Cullen, the co-owner of Squatch Den Records.
Cullen said Record Store Day at a locally owned shop has its perks, compared to going to a big-name store.
"There are certain variants that are exclusive to independent record shops like us. Whether it be an Alt cover or a different color record... [It's] obvious [to support] small business[es]. Would you want 100 [chain stores] and that's your only option, or are you going to support local and get something completely fresh and different," said Cullen.
Cullen said there will be many giveaways throughout the day. The Squatch Den Records will be open on Saturday, April 12th, until 8 p.m. for you to grab a vinyl exclusive. After Record Store Day, Cullen said they have events almost every week, such as listening parties or live shows.
"We're super happy with the turnout so thank you all who did come out. Be sure to support your local [record] shop," said Cullen.
According to Record Store Day's website, 'In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. For several years, 60% or more of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.'
