ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A man already serving prison time for the kidnapping and murder of an Ithaca man, will be spending 17 more years behind bars after being sentenced in Chemung County for other crimes.

Joseph Howell, 39, who is from Newfield, was convicted on two counts of Burglary, two counts of Robbery and one count of Kidnapping, according to the Chemung County District Attorney.

He was sentenced to 17 years behind bars for each count, which will be served at the same time, the DA announced Friday.

In February of 2023, Howell broke into a home on Hulbert Hollow Road while armed with a shotgun. He stole from the homeowner and abducted him.

However, his sentence for the crimes related to this incident will not start until Howell completes his prison sentence for the abduction and murder of Thomas Rath.

Howell was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the crimes, according to the Chemung County District Attorney. He was found guilty on charges of Murder in the first Degree, Kidnapping in the first Degree and three counts of Intimidating a Witness in Tioga County Court.

Rath was abducted from the Ithaca homeless encampment known as "the jungle" in May of 2023. Rath's remains were discovered buried in a shallow grave in Candor in August of that year.
