Man who kidnapped Elmira mother and son sentenced in Pennsylvania

TOWANDA, PA. (WENY) -- A man who kidnapped a mother and her son out of their home in Elmira, New York will serve a maximum sentence of just over 13 years in Pennsylvania State Prison for the crimes.
Damion Gooden, 48, from Norristown, Pa. was sentenced on charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Restraint and two counts of Terroristic threats, according to the Bradford County District Attorney.
As WENY News previously reported, Gooden broke into their apartment in the early morning hours in April of 2024, and beat the mother in her bed before tying her up in a chair, threatening her with a knife.
He then took the mother and her son, a teenager, into her car. Gooden was taking them to Philadelphia.
Gooden stopped for gas in Athens at a gas station. According to an original affidavit, his phone fell out of his pocket when he got out of the car. The mother was able to grab the phone and called 911, alerting police about what was going on.
He was apprehended by an Athens Township police officer in South Waverly, after an Amber Alert led law enforcement to the car, according to the DA.
The teenage boy is not Gooden's son. The boy's mother had a restraining order against him.
Gooden will serve a minimum sentence of two years and 10 months behind bars. He faces a maximum sentence of 13 years and three months
He has had a one to three month prison sentence added to his sentence after fighting an inmate in the Bradford County Correctional Facility, according to the DA.
When Gooden completes his sentence in Pennsylvania, he will be brought to New York to answer for other crimes related to the incident and other offenses that are still pending.
