ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- FEMA has issued updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the City of Ithaca that will have a major impact on some residents if its not adopted. As it stands, the City Common Council Common is scheduled to adopt Local Law Chapter 186 at their May 7th meeting.

The City of Ithaca is required to adopt the new maps to continue participation in the National Flood Insurance Program. The program, which is managed by FEMA, is designed to make sure people can purchase flood insurance, give communities the ability to apply for flood disaster assistance, and more.

If the maps are adopted by the City, they would go into effect on June 18th. That means some new construction projects might need to get floodplain development permits.
