BATH, N.Y. (WENY) -- A Hornell man faces 25 years behind bars after being convicted of hitting and killing a person while he was driving high.

Michael Eldridge, a 26-year-old, was found guilty on charges of Manslaughter, Vehicular Manslaughter, Assault and Reckless Endangerment after a six-day trial.

The crash happened at the intersection of Route 415 and Michigan Hollow Road in the Town of Avoca on August 6, 2023.

Before getting behind the wheel, Eldridge smoked marijuana for seven hours straight, according to the Steuben County District Attorney's Office. He then drove from Hornell to Avoca. The DA says Eldridge was driving 87 miles per hour in a 55 mph stretch of the road seconds before veering into the left lane and smashing into the driver-side door of an oncoming car.

The driver of that car, 51-year-old Michael Heinrich, was killed in the crash. Two other people were severely hurt in the collision. Eldridge suffered only minor injuries, according to authorities.

Eldridge was taken to the Steuben County Jail without bail to await sentencing.
