In Pennsylvania, there is a program where people can donate their unfinished cancer medications. Those unused prescriptions— which can often cost thousands of dollars—  can then be given to low income patients in need.

However, the program has not been utilized much since its formation in 2008, with only 2 pharmacies in the whole state signed up. A news investigation from KDKA in Pittsburgh last year said even those two don't actually participate.

Legislators have proposed a fix.

House bill 69 would expand the program from just cancer drugs to all prescription drugs.

The bill also lays out more uniform liability rules for organizations participating.

"For individuals and families who may have lost loved ones, [it’s] an opportunity to take something from their experience and their loss and then pass it on to someone else,” Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) said, the bill’s sponsor. “And I think we all recognize the increasing costs of health care and some of the challenges that are there."

The bill passed out of the House Health Committee today with unanimous support.
