ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Cornell University announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Defense canceled over 75 research grants at the school.

According to Cornell, the research they were doing related to American national defense, cybersecurity and health.

The contracts included research into new materials for jet engines, information networks, superconductors, space and satellite communications, cancer research and more.

"We are actively seeking information from federal officials to learn more about the basis for these decisions," Cornell University said in a statement.

The announcement comes after the New York Times reported that the federal government froze more than $1 billion in grants to Cornell University. The school says it has not received information that would confirm the figure.
