'What Draws You to the Library?' Contest, Tween Time Peeps Taste Test & More Happening this Month at the Southeast Steuben Co. Library
(WENY) -- There are lots of fun programs and events happening this month at the Southeast Steuben Co. Library in Corning. Whether it's activities related to National Library Week, or Tween Time taste testing, there's something for everyone.
April 7th through the 12th is National Library Week and Sue McConnell, the Children's Librarian said they're going to kick things off with a contest.
"Stop in anytime during the week and pick up a form 'What Draws You to the Library?' You can draw a picture of what draws you to the library or write a couple of sentences. We will put all of those into three different levels; kids, teens, and adults," said McConnell.
The children's winner will receive a bag filled with goodies, like squirt guns, a football, books, a kite, and a painting.
When asked if McConnell was expecting anyone to draw her for the contest, she said she's actually already received one submission.
Happening on Tuesday, April 8th at 7 p.m. at the Corning Museum of Glass, is a lecture from a woman who survived the Holocaust. The speaker is Tova Friedman, who, as a five-year-old, was imprisoned with her mother in the Auschwitz concentration camp. She will talk about her story and describe how she survived.
McConnell said she will be there to hand out something to a certain amount of students who attend.
"The first 50 students [who] come in will get a free copy of her newest book, 'The Daughter of Auschwitz.' I will be there with 50 copies," said McConnell.
There will be a Q&A with Friedman after her presentation.
Happening on April 10th from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. is Tween Time. On Thursday, kids ages nine to 12 years old can participate in a Peeps Taste Test.
"They don't have to sign up, they can just pop-in. I have seven different flavors we are going to try and rate," said McConnell.
While this next event isn't technically happening in April, McConnell still wanted to let people know about Free Comic Book Day. The library will give out a free comic book to each kid and it's happening on May 3rd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"There's quite the variety, so depending on what your taste is... Whether you like the Justice League, Super Man, the InvestiGators, come and grab a free comic. After Free Comic Book Day, I'm going to show everyone [a movie, based on their] favorite comic strip, Garfield," said McConnell.
