Mud Creek Bison Ranch unveils new event space
SAVONA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Mud Creek Bison Ranch (MCBR) celebrated the opening of its new restaurant and bar venue on Saturday. Along with the grand opening of the new venue, the ranch is celebrating its fifth anniversary. The growth of the business is something owner Chris Comstock said he never expected.
"It's just kind of a happy accident," said Comstock. "But we're committed now. This is what we do full time."
The MCBR opened on April 4, 2020, in the midst of the COVID Pandemic. At first, visitors could only drive through and see the bison, with radio commentary included. Comstock says moving forward, he wants his business to become so much more.
"We're hoping to be more than just that," said Comsotck. "So, every Saturday have a flea market or a farmer's market and, you know, trying to have some type of music or event weekly and dancing or something coming in the future."
The new center at the ranch includes a restaurant, bar, and dance floor. It's a large space that Comstock said opens the possibility for a larger connection with the community.
"One of our main goals is to do a community or charity event once a month," said Comstock. "So, like May 31st, we're actually going to do a poker run. Not just motorcycles, any two or four wheels to benefit Tali Sutton who passed away a couple months ago."
Also in the new building, bison meat products and a gift shop. The gift shop is full of locally sourced items. It's just one way Comstock said his family ties into the business.
"The hand-painted glassware is all done by my grandmother," Comstock said. "My aunt does the embroidery on the bibs and the receiving blankets, and my uncle does some of the laser art and woodwork and stuff like that. But mostly everything we try to sell here is locally handcrafted or locally made."
If you are interested in taking a ride around the ranch to see the bison, admission is $5, and kids five and under are free. The MCBR in Savona is currently open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. More information can be found on their website here.
