New York to hold 2nd annual Caring for your Cemetery Day

NEW YORK (WENY) -- New York State announced that Saturday April 26th will be the second annual Caring for your Cemetery Day at dozens of cemeteries across the state. When started last year, only 12 cemeteries participated, but this year, over 75 are taking part.
“New York’s cemeteries are home to so much of our state’s history and culture, and it’s critical that we collectively work to preserve and care for these treasured, but often overlooked, community assets,” said Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley in a statement.
Volunteers will be asked to help clean up trash, branches and more. There will also be gardening opportunities, with the removal of overgrowth and weeds and planting of flowers and new grass seed. Old seasonal decorations will also be removed in an effort to get cemeteries ready for the Spring and Summer and Mother's Day.
“That’s why I’m proud to announce our 2nd annual ‘Caring for Your Cemetery Day’ on April 26th. I encourage all New Yorkers to take this opportunity to volunteer at your local cemetery and help future generations learn to appreciate the history, culture and unique stories our cemeteries have to offer," said Mosley.
The following local cemeteries are taking part,
Grove Cemetery, Bath, 10 a.m.
Highland Cemetery, Montour Falls, 10 a.m.
South Hill Cemetery, Ithaca, 9 a.m.
Lake View Cemetery, Ithaca, 10 a.m.
Greensprings Natural Cemetery, Newfield, 10 a.m.
Gibson Corners Cemetery, Owego, 9 a.m.
If you are interested in participating at any of these local cemeteries, you are encouraged to reach out directly. You can also email cemeteries@dos.ny.gov or call 518-474-6226 with any questions.
