City of Elmira considering community solar plans
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The City of Elmira is the latest to consider a community solar project for the area. In a special meeting on March 14th, the city council approved a letter of intent from Reify Energy.
The city says they're exploring the possibility of putting one or more solar sites on city owned properties. More than 250 properties are listed on the city's website as potential sites. Mayor Mandell says once sites are chosen, then it will be figured out where the energy will go.
"We were approached by the Reify organization that was interested in doing some community solar projects on city land, which they would provide us with a lease payment for our land," said Mayor Dan Mandell. "The city would actually pick those lands out, working with Reify, making sure that they're done strategically so they don't impede on neighborhoods and so forth. So, it would be a good revenue maker for the city potentially."
Mandell expressed that battery storage is not on the table for these proposals. As of now, the proposal is still in the planning stages, and the city will be in further talks with Reify.
