Volunteers Needed for First Annual Shoreline Clean-up at Eldridge Park in Elmira
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- If you're looking for community service hours or want to volunteer for fun, then this weekend's event is for you. As the saying goes, 'many hands make for light work,' and Eldridge Park is looking for your help with its First Annual Shoreline Clean-up.
"The purpose is to [ensure] we are cleaning up the lake. It’s been a project of ours we’ve wanted to put together for a little while now. It was our maintenance manager that started this and [we] will continue to push it every year," said Eldridge Park General Manager, Trisha Elwood.
The goal is not only to clean up Eldridge Lake but also to help protect wildlife.
"Every year, this has been a struggle for us. Being the [Eldridge Park Carousel] Preservation Society we maintain the midway, we don’t really maintain the lake. But, we wanted to partner with the city to help them out, because it is an ongoing issue with all of the littering around the lake [and] the fishing lines [that get caught] around the geese and the ducks' [neck/feet/bodies]," said Elwood.
The clean-up is happening on Saturday, March 29th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Eldridge Park. People are encouraged to wear comfy clothes and closed-toed shoes and bring a rake if they have one. Gloves, garbage bags, and water will be provided.
If you or someone you know is looking to volunteer during the summer at Eldridge Park, please email Director@Eldridgepark.org or call (607)-732-8440. There will be volunteer opportunities based on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis operating one of the ride attractions. Volunteers are scheduled for five-hour shifts. Opportunities include ride operators, mini golf attendants, train engineers, boat captains, gift shop operators, car show assistants, and grounds maintenance.
Eldridge Park's First Annual Shoreline Clean-up is sponsored by: Chemung Valley Ridge Runners, Chemung County Federation of Sportsmen, Trout Unlimited, Rick Curren Hardware Feed & Need, Verna & Sons, and IDJ Entertainment.
Opening Day for Eldridge Park is Friday, May 23rd from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
