Elmira College Dance Marathon raises thousands for local NICUs
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira College Dance Marathon held its annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 22nd to support the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The event set out to bring awareness to local Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs).
"We just get to come together and meet people that are here for the same cause and raising money for the NICU which benefits a lot of families in our area," said Jonathan Stromsness. Jonathan and his wife Rachel said their daughter, Kinsley, spent nine days in the NICU after she was born early.
Rachel said her pregnancy was normal until doctors revealed a complication. Jonathan and Rachel say they weren't prepared for a complication, and that's one reason they attended the dance marathon.
"It's great to see this, the college is doing this and the students and becoming more aware that's something we weren't aware about so to raise awareness in the community," Jonathan said.
The event was organized by Elmira College students. One organizer said they are participating because they want to spread the message about local NICUs for families and those who are expecting.
"I think it really like makes students think outside of just the college community, and thinks about like the community we're in as a whole," said Emily Andersen, the decorations executive for the event, adding, "A lot of us aren't from Elmira, so it makes us learn a lot about where we are and what we're working with around us as well as it shows us what it looks like to raise money for a good cause."
The event included prince and princess-themed activities, dancing, and a place for people to donate money to the cause.
Jonathan and Rachel say they are very grateful for the fundraising event as it gives a platform for more people to talk about NICU care. Rachel also offered advice for families who may be going through a similar experience.
"It's definitely a tough journey, that's for sure and you never know what to expect," Rachel said, adding, "We found a lot of comfort and support with the staff at the NICU and so in that time just trust the professionals and you know lean on them for the support and comfort that they're offering. They're a great resource."
Event organizers say the Dance Marathon raised $10,365.30. The proceeds go to Arnot Health, which says the money will stay local to fund treatments, pediatric medical equipment, and charitable care.
