Horseheads Intermediate School hosts STEM Night

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Horseheads Intermediate School hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Night on Thursday, March 20th. The event was held in the school's cafeteria, where students and families could gather to visit with different local STEM-related businesses.
Some local businesses at the event included Tanglewood Nature Center and Arnot Health, among others. WENY Meteorologist Connor Freidhoff was also at the event with the tornado-making machine.
Connor explained to the attendees how the machine worked, saying the hot air in the machine rises and interacts with a fan above the box, which creates an updraft. He said the dry ice acts as sinking cold air, and provides moisture when it reacts to the water. The fan then acts as wind, making a tornado-like vortex with the vapor, he added.
The night also included an array of hands-on activities for students and families.
