Staying safe after storm leaves many without power
SOUTHPORT, N.Y. (WENY) -- After storms rolled through the Twin Tiers on Sunday afternoon, the NYSEG and Tri-County Rural Electric websites showed they are still assessing when the power will return to much of the area as of Sunday night. With the power still out, the Southport Volunteer Fire Department is giving tips on how to be safe on the roads while the power is out.
"Just keep their eyes open for things that don't look right on the street," said Fire Chief Tim Sweeney. "Don't drive through power lines, don't drive through whatever looks like a power line, cause no one knows," he added.
Chief Sweeney also said if you see a downed power line on the road, you should stay away and call 911 to report it. He says you may not be able to tell if the wires are live or not.
The Southport Fire Department responded to seven different calls in response to the storm, according to Chief Sweeney. He said those included downed power lines, trees tangled with wires, and trees falling onto structures.
