Elmira's Gunshot Detection System Helps Lead to Arrest of 23-Year-Old Man

(WENY) -- On March 15th around 1:35 a.m., Elmira Police Officers were called to the area of Balsam St. and Broadway St for a report of gunshots. Officials were notified of the shooting through a notification from the city's Flock Raven Gunshot Detection System.
The system, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, is designed to pinpoint the location of gunfire within 90 feet and alert police in real time.
Police said they were responding to the area of the incident and learned that a vehicle allegedly involved was fleeing at a high rate of speed. Officials said a police officer found the fleeing vehicle near Broadway St. and South Ave., and three people were taken into custody.
A defaced 9mm semi-automatic handgun and spent shell casings were recovered, with police arresting one person.
Police arrested 23-year-old Jaheim Brown and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second-Degree; loaded firearm, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third-Degree; defaced firearm.
Brown remains in police custody, pending arraignment in Elmira City Court.
