Homeless man accused of starting Binghamton fire that killed firefighter
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WENY) -- Broome County and Binghamton officials came together on Friday, March 14th to announce one person has been charged with arson and murder for allegedly starting a blaze last month in the City that killed a firefighter. According to authorities, 36-year-old Patrick Shea was indicted by a Broome County Grand Jury and remanded without bail.
Authorities say Shea, who is homeless, was located at a Broome County Home on Thursday, March 13th and taken into custody. Binghamton Police say they were assisted by fire investigators through the division of Homeland Security and the Broome County District Attorney's Office.
During the course of the investigation, authorities say they determined the fire was not accidental, but would not say how it was started. The blaze happened on Main Street on February 12th.
Firefighter John JR Gaudet died after a wall collapsed on him. Two other firefighters were also injured during the same blaze.
Police say they are still investigating.
