Spencer-Van Etten High School’s 'Sister Act' Gets Ready to Take You Back to the 70s
SPENCER, N.Y. (WENY) -- Prepare for a trip back to the vibrant 1970s as Spencer Van Etten High School presents the musical “Sister Act.” With final dress rehearsals underway, the excitement among students and faculty alike is makes everything possible.
The musical is based on the beloved early 90s movie starring Whoopi Goldberg.
“The story follows the main character, Deloris, who witnesses something she shouldn't," says Director Kat Wixstead. "For her safety, she is hidden away in a convent to protect her.”
Preparation for “Sister Act” began with auditions back in October. Following solo practice during winter break, students have dedicated the last two months to rehearsals, ready to showcase their talents and the story of Deloris Van Cartier.
Delilah Halpert, who plays the lead role of Deloris, describes her character’s arc: “She’s very extravagant. After witnessing a murder, she finds herself in a convent for protection, waiting to testify in court. Her larger-than-life personality shines throughout the show.”
Halpert’s outgoing nature makes her well-suited for the role. Early in Act One, Deloris learns about the murder she witnessed, leading to a complete upheaval in her life. Through her journey, she discovers that being extravagant is not always necessary, even as she initially resists the idea of hiding away.
“Deloris takes everything in stride, she has no anxiety and is always ready for anything. As the story progresses, she learns to enjoy a simpler life. While she initially dreams of being a big, famous star, she realizes that she truly values the connections she forms with her sisters," Halpert.
The importance of teamwork within the cast: “If one person messes up, everyone is there to help and get back on track. It’s about working together. During rehearsals, you’ll see students running lines with each other. Our stage manager, Maggie, is always there to assist, ensuring that we’re all in this together.”
With the musical set to open soon, Spencer Van Etten High School invites everyone to come and experience the fun, laughter, and heartwarming moments of “Sister Act.”
Sister Act takes the stage March 20-22nd at Spencer Van Etten High School. Click here to learn more about the three shows and how you can grab your seat.
