Guthrie unveils Maternity Oasis Mobile Unit
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WENY) -- Guthrie has unveiled a "doctor's office on wheels", designed to bring maternal care to patients who need it anywhere they are.
The facility, called a Maternity Oasis Mobile Unit, or MOM, was built to allow the hospital network to treat underserved patients in Central New York and the Southern Tier, according to Guthrie.
The MOM Unit is staffed with midwives, nurses, doulas and other health care professionals to provide vital pregnancy services.
“After 35 years and thousands of deliveries, it is just as rewarding now as it was then to help bring a child into this world,” said Dr. J. Manuel Arreguin, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Guthrie Clinic. “But not every mother has the same access to proper health care during the process. It is overwhelming to be part of this next stage of maternal care in our communities.”
Guthrie says the unit will help them in their mission to reduce premature birth and maternal death rates in New York.
The MOM Unit was supported by a $3 million grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. The mobile unit is 39 feet long and features two patient exam rooms and additional space.
The unit will be stationed at the United Way of Broome County on Monday, with additional visits across the region already planned.
