A long-anticipated project in Erie is nearing completion. A new greenhouse at the Savacchio Opportunity Park is closer to opening. It is at the corner of East 18th Street and Downing Avenue in Erie.

The greenhouse will focus on growing a variety of produce, most of which will be supplied to nearby Curtze Foods. Some employees have already been hired with more expected.

A group of nonprofits is involved in the project they hope will bring a boost to the neighborhood.

“It’s a social enterprise because it’s run by a nonprofit group,” said Tina Mengine, president and CEO of the Erie County Redevelopment Authority.  “The goal is that the money gets reinvested back into the communities that those folks serve.”

After some delays, the greenhouse is expected to open in April.
