Girl Scouts Celebrate 113th Birthday and Encourage Community to Join the fun
(WENY) -- March 12 marks the 113th birthday of the Girl Scouts. Local representatives of the worldwide service organization are inviting everyone to celebrate this week.
The Girl Scouts were founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, also known as Daisy, in Georgia. It started with a troop of 18 girls, and now, almost 10 million girls and women worldwide are part of the program.
Being a Girl Scout is not just about selling cookies, representatives say several life skills and goals for young girls are important and have remained the same over the years.
Jaime Alvarez, the vice president of marketing and communications for Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways says being a Girl Scout means empowering women, building leadership skills, learning new things, partaking in community service, making friends, and more.
"We're in the middle of our cookie program for our council right now, you know, and girls are using digital cookie, which is an online storefront, so they're learning digital marketing," said Alvarez. "They're still using traditional paper order cards, but you can see sort of using that as an example just how the program has gone through the last you know, 100 plus years, and really adapted to still continue to provide leadership skills, business skills, you know, building girls of courage, confidence and character, teaching them to make the world a better place in the world that we are currently in now."
Girl Scout Week is being celebrated through Saturday, March 15. Alvarez says whether you're a Girl Scout or not, anyone is welcome to join and celebrate the work that local Girl Scouts are doing in your community.
