WEST ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A local CubScout Troupe was off to the races for their very own pinewood derby on Wednesday night.

The Hendy Elementary Cubscout Pack 101 hosted the event, where a dozen kids designed and built their own wooden cars.  The young racers then competed in front of the crowd, showing off their craftsmanship and teamwork.  Troop leaders say the kids learned about building, competition, and sportsmanship.

"It's one of the goals that we have, is to let the kids see what the community has to offer, and then let the community see how great these kids are," said Peggy Abramson, a den leader for the troop.

"Racing isn't just about beating others, its about having fun!" said cub scout troop member Joseph.

The Elmira Aviators also joined in on the fun, racing their own cars and helping out with the competition.  Kids who were interested could also sign up to participate in a bigger derby at another time.
