ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY)-- The theatre department at Thomas A. Edison High School in Elmira Heights is preparing for its grand return with the musical "Hadestown." Students are diligently working on their final dress rehearsals as the program looks to return strong.

Reviving a school’s drama program takes hard work and dedication. The teen edition of "Hadestown" brings the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to life. Like the original myth, the musical explores themes of struggle, love, and doubt. Amanda Baroody, the production stage manager and a high school teacher, emphasizes that the musical’s message remains relevant today for people of all ages.

"'Hadestown' is a Greek myth, and I think that in this day and age, where there's a lot of turmoil in the world and it’s hard to find hope, many of the Greek myths conveyed serious messages. Although they can be a bit depressing, they always contain a glimmer of hope. Even though this show doesn't necessarily end perfectly, there is always that little bit of hope," explained Baroody.

Regarding the ensemble cast, senior Will Timofeef highlights their significant role in the production.

"The ensemble takes the forefront quite a bit, and we're on stage for nearly all of the show. There are a total of 36 songs, and we're featured in about 30 or 32 of them. There are only a couple of songs where we're not visible. It's really cool because we contribute to the story, the setting, and the characters. Each of us has created our own backstory for our individual ensemble roles," said Timofeef.

Senior Kailey Ripley plays Hermes and also serves as the show's narrator. She explains that her role helps guide the audience through the storyline.

"It's fascinating because I get to control the show, especially when someone dies. I have to inform everyone about it, and it's interesting that I get to run things while still being a character," shared Ripley.

For Baroody, she hopes the production will open doors for students both on and off the stage.

"I'm hoping that through this theater program, students will see that if you persevere and truly work hard at something, it can lead to great accomplishments," emphasized Baroody.

"Hadestown" The Teen Edition will take the stage on Friday, March 7th, and Saturday, March 8th. For details about the production and the drama department at Thomas A. Edison High School, click here.
