Annual St. Patrick's Tradition Returns to Hanover Square in Horseheads
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- A festive St. Patrick's tradition returned to Hanover Square in Horseheads on Sunday afternoon. Despite the cold weather, people put their art skills to the test for the annual Shamrock in the Square.
Members of the Horseheads Fire Department and village Mayor Kevin Adams worked on the piece to help kick off festivities in the community that lead up to the St. Patrick's Parade, which is set for Saturday, March 8 at 2:00 P.M.
Green paint, white paint, and a variety of brushes were brought out to touch up the traditional shamrock. The classic green shamrock was adorned with its usual white outline and the number '25 to mark the year as well as a signature from firefighters reading "HFD."
The art installation comes just one week ahead of the annual parade and Mayor Adams says both events are a great way to get people together and show community spirit.
"Well, they say rain or shine, I guess we've got to add snow with that too," said Mayor Adams. "It might be sunny, it might be cold, but it will be here and it will be on and we welcome the whole area, not just the village, to come on out and start and kick off the St Patrick's Day season with big floats and a ton of candy."
The St. Patrick's Parade kicks off on the corner of Center and Fletcher streets, and ends at the fire station. People of all ages are encouraged to attend.
