Avian Flu found in dead geese near Seneca Lake following testing
ROMULUS, N.Y. (WENY) -- A few weeks ago concerned residents in Seneca County reported a high number of dead geese in their vicinity. On January 10th, New York State DEC collected several goose carcasses and transported them to Cornell University where they later tested positive for Avian Flu (HPAI).
The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association sent out a bulletin to the community upon learning that the birds found in Seneca County tested positive for Avian Influenza. With bird flu on the rise nationally, there are several guidelines that folks in the Finger Lakes should follow to stay safe.
High Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, has made its impacts well-known in several corners of our lives. A cost of dozen eggs at regional supermarkets is going anywhere from $5-$7 for some. New concerns are growing as a group of dead geese tested positive for HPAI earlier this month.
"So we know that there were dead geese on the east side, quite a few in Lakeshore Landing. And then just in my small neighborhood, I think we've counted around 50 or so. And then we've heard other people ask questions in other areas, the shoreline and I think even into Geneva where the geese are being found on the shoreline," said Bill Roege, President of Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association.
The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association has already sent out several emails, and bulletins through their social channels informing locals about what to do when encountering groups of dead birds like the ones tested.
"So you don't want to touch it or anything. You want to keep your pets away, certainly, because eating the flesh is possible for our other wildlife or pets to get infected," added Roege.
Personal protective equipment like face coverings, eye protection, and disposable gloves are recommended when handling bird carcasses. DEC has launched a new platform for the public to report groups of dead birds and potential outbreaks to monitor HPAI spread.
"If you encounter dead birds, really, report them to us and give us more information and reach out to your local wildlife office if necessary and they can give you more guidance on the appropriate next steps," remarked DEC Small Game Unit Leader Joshua Stiller.
DEC has stated that the Wildlife Health Program is continuing to monitor the presence and impact High Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the Empire State. They are strongly encouraging the public that any groups of dead birds that they find should be considered HPAI positive, and reports should be made to DEC.
