Human remains found near Chemung River identified
CHEMUNG, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Police have identified the human remains found on Sept. 28 near the banks of the Chemung River as a missing Elmira man.
The skeletal remains were identified as 22-year-old Matthew Barber, who went missing in 2020.
The identification comes after a months-long DNA analysis and investigation performed by State Police.
This is not the first time Barber's remains were recovered along the waterway. In May 2022, a boater discovered Barber's jawbone east of Chemung on the river banks.
Additionally, in May 2020, adult skeletal remains were found between Elmira and Lowman. They were later identified as James Burdick of Corning, who had been missing since November 2018.
