Man sentenced for 2021 fatal stabbing in Elmira
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A man from Lockport, New York was sentenced Monday for a fatal stabbing that happened in Elmira back in 2021.
According to the Chemung County District Attorney's Office, 34-year-old Stephen Pesesky will serve 20-years in prison with 5-years of post-release supervision for manslaughter in the first degree. He was sentenced for killing then 34-year-old Jennifer Karda, also of Lockport, at a home on Johnson Street in Elmira in October of 2021.

The DA's office said Pesesky was found incompetent to stand trial, and medical experts said he lacks the mental capacity to fully understand the seriousness of what he did -- or that he did anything wrong. The DA's office said it retained an independent physician, but the physician could not definitively disagree with the opinions brought forth that claimed Pesesky lacked the appropriate mental capacity. A plea deal for a lesser charge of manslaughter in the 1st degree was accepted.
