OVID, N.Y. (WENY) -- Six days ago, a massive fire destroyed many stores and apartments on Ovid's Main Street. The community watched in shock as the flames turned to rubble, but it didn't take very long for the surrounding community to start helping the community begin its recovery.

Now, as recovery efforts move forward, support has been pouring in from organizations like United Way of Seneca County. Executive Director Rhonda Jasper said that the outpouring of support has been incredible. They've received so much food, clothing, and other goods that they've had to begin turning some items away.

Jasper told WENY News, the work is far from over and the community still needs support to rebuild everything that has been lost.

"We need to remember that this is going to be a lengthy process. There's always this immediate response, which is fantastic, but we also know that the energy around that, especially outside of the Ovid area, will you know it'll start to fade out. So please know that there are going to be opportunities to continue to donate, to continue to volunteer for some time. You know it'll look different as we're moving forward, but this is I mean we're looking at months. You know, year, year, whatever it takes to get Ovid back on their feet. But you know, if you can't or haven't been able to respond now, there's still plenty of time," shared Jasper.

United Way of Seneca County shared that as of Monday, January 27th, they had raised over $40,000 in monetary donations. All of which will go directly back to the Ovid community for those affected by the fire. The organization is also working to update its accounts regularly with specific items and resources still needed.

Authorities released a statement within 24 hours of the blaze saying they believe the cause of the fire was a portable battery charger. Tuesday, January 28th, marks one week since the fire.
