ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- As temperatures continue to drop dangerously low, there are resources in place to make sure everyone has a warm place to go to get out of the cold.

Catholic Charities is operating a warming station in Elmira.  It is open 24 hours a day, and aims to keep those experiencing homelessness safe and out of the cold, even if its just for a little while.  The warming station is at 160 High Street, the same building as the Elmira Community Kitchen.

Those needing to use the warming shelter can go in the double doors with the awning.  Officials say the homeless shelter is also open with beds, and the warming station provides chairs.  Catholic Charities says they are offering more than just warmth in this chilly time.

"Typically a warming station, as mandated by the state, is open for a very small amount of time. But, what we've wanted to do, is open that up so that anyone can come because it is going to be so cold," said Katie Rhodes, the Marketing and Development Director for Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler Counties.  "We're also providing food so they can get breakfast, lunch and dinner. We're doing coffee, hot chocolate, so they really just can come in, get warm, get out of the cold and then see if they would like to take advantage of the services, too, that we offer. If we can help them to work on housing or anything else that they might need."

Catholic Charities is also accepting donations of hats, gloves, scarves, and blankets for the warming center.  Those can be taken to the Samaritan Center on Elmira's South Side.
