ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Police Department (EPD) held a special ceremony on Friday, January 17th, to promote three officers to higher ranks and swear in one recruit. 

Daejeon Gardner, the department's newest officer, took the Oath of Officer during the event. Previously a Correction Officer at the Chemung County Jail, Gardner will begin training at the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy next week. 

After Gardner graduates in June, he will enter the department's Field Training Program and he is expected to be paroling Elmira Streets throughout the summer.

Christopher Osiecki was officially promoted to Deputy Chief of Police. Osiecki joined the department in 2008 and brings over 16 years of service and experience to his new role, including time as the Captain of the dayshift.

Matthew McGrain was promoted to Police Lieutenant. Hired in 2012 and promoted to Sergeant in 2022, McGrain has held numerous specialized roles, including Evidence Technician, SWAT team member, and department Historian.

James Wellington, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan was promoted to Police Sergeant. He was hired in 2014, Wellington is a Master Instructor, Field Training Officer, and SWAT team member.

The Elmira Police Department recognized the dedication of all four officers and their contributions to the community.
