ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Addams Family is anything but ordinary, and that's exactly what makes their story entertaining. This Broadway musical is bringing its creepy, kooky charm to the Clemens Center with a re-imagined look at the beloved family with a quirky and modern twist.

The show centers around Wednesday Addams, who's all grown up and grappling with something even more shocking than her unique family - love. Melody Munitz plays Wednesday in the national Broadway tour and says the story is full of humor, heart, and surprises.

"Now we have this Broadway musical that was actually on Broadway in 2009 and 2010, 2011," says Munitz. "Telling the story of taking this beloved Adams family and discovering what happens when the little girl Wednesday Adams grows up and falls in love with a normal boy, and what happens when that boy's family has to come for dinner at the Addams family's creepy, kooky mansion."

But playing a character like Wednesday comes with a unique challenge. Known for her dark, sardonic wit, and gothic personality, Wednesday is learning to navigate emotions she's not exactly used to, like love and even vulnerability.

Wednesday's family is certainly one-of-a-kind. The iconic characters include devoted parents, Gomez and Morticia, her troubling brother Pugsly, and even Grandma, who Munitz describes as a "loose cannon."

"We have Uncle Fester, who is absolutely in a world of his own, and we've got cousin it. We have Thing, the disembodied hand that everyone adores, along with a host of ancestors who are Adam's family members past, who kind of get roped into the action to help this love come to be," shares Munitz.

The show also explores a timely theme, surrounding what it really means to be "normal."

"Normal being sort of a subversive word, this show kind of turns that on its head. And we have this family that is thought to be very odd and strange and unnatural. And then we bring in this so-called normal family and we really see how that gets inverted and how, ultimately, we are all the same," said Munitz.

The Addams Family musical first debuted on stage in 2010 and has been updated to fit today's world. Munitz says there will be plenty of laughs and maybe a fear of tears.

The show will take the stage at Elmira's Clemens Center on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21st.
