Waverly's Kolsen Keathley signs to play football at Ithaca College
WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - Wednesday afternoon, Waverly football standout Kolsen Keathley signed to play football at the DIII level. He's headed just 35 miles up the road to play for Ithaca College.
Keathley led the Wolverines to a Class C state title last season and guided them to another successful year this season. The Wolverines ultimately fell to Chenango Forks in the last seconds of the Section IV Class C championship.
He finished his career with the Wolverines with 788 rushing yards and 1,049 receiving yards.
At Waverly, Keathley played both sides of the ball as a running back and outside linebacker. He said he'll be transitioning to only the defensive side of the ball at IC, and possibly some special teams as well.
"I told Coach Grigsby the one thing I like most about football is energy, and he told me that's the one thing their team brings", said Keathley. "So I went up there and there was tons of energy going. The coaches were into it, players were into it. I just love the camp, love the environment. I went back up for practice, I went back up for a game, then I went on an official visit and it just felt right. I mean everything about it, academics, athletics, campus is beautiful. I just loved it. So you know I had to choose it."
While at IC, Keathley plans to attend the School of Business, majoring in marketing.
Keathley will be joining a Bomber squad that has a longstanding and intense rivalry with SUNY Cortland. He knows that as he transitions to Ithaca College, it's time to leave the red behind and fully embrace the Bomber blue.
"I know that's what I've been saying these past couple weeks", said Keathley. "I got to get my red in before I leave Waverly, and once I go to Ithaca it's straight blue from there. But knowing I'm going to be a part of that is just super exciting. I'm ready for it."
Last season the Bombers went 6-4 overall, 5-1 in conference.
