(WENY) -- Spending long periods of time outdoors in winter without proper protection can be dangerous especially when temperatures drop below zero.

Bundling up before we head outside is something we all do as the temperatures tumble in the winter. However, extended periods of frigid conditions can pose a threat when the mercury drops below zero.

“Winter can be a wonderful time to enjoy festivities and outdoor activities with loved ones, but can also become dangerous without preparation and caution,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “Dress appropriately to prevent frostbite, keep generators outdoors, away from windows and doors, and never leave space heaters running unattended. And road conditions can be hazardous, so make sure you have supplies in your car if you’re stranded.”

The simple definition of hypothermia is the body cannot produce heat faster than it is losing it, and when the internal body temperatures drops below 95 degrees. Wind chill serves as one of the best metrics for determining an estimate on how long both frostbite and hypothermia can occur.

10 mile per hour winds coupled with a temperature of minus-five can result in frostbite and hypothermia in 30 minutes. Some of the first signs of hypothermia include an accelerated heartbeat and uncontrolled shivering, signs that the body is trying to warm itself up.

"They should be evaluated and have someone probably help warm up in the ways that a medical facility can help with. But in the absence of that, getting them inside, getting them dry, getting them warmed up, if they can drink, drinking something warm, those are all good first steps. But generally, if somebody has slurred speech or they're confused, they need to get some medical attention urgently," remarked Guthrie Cortland Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Philip Heavner.

The elderly, infants, and toddlers are the most at risk, as their bodies are not as efficient at regulating internal temperature. Removing wet clothes once indoors and finding a heat source will help the body regulate its temperature quicker.
