BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Tributes to President Jimmy Carter have been pouring in from all over the country, including right here in the Southern Tier.  On Wednesday, the Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Habitat for Humanity chapters put a memorial in the Arnot Mall, honoring Carter's commitment to affordable housing.

"It feels good for us, for our three chapters from Habitat for Humanity, to be down here at the mall to honor President Carter, who put a lot of his time and service into for Habitat, building a lot of homes around the country," said Martin van DeGrinten, a Habitat for Humanity builder.  "We're very honored to be here and to share it with the public."

A wall was raised in honor of the contributions that Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter made to Habitat for Humanity since 1984.  President Carter was known for promoting health and stability, something that resonated with a lot of people, including Becca Forsyth.  She said she has been a Habitat for Humanity homeowner since 1998.

"It's beautiful," said Forsyth. "His vision is what creates homes for people like me. It's really powerful for us to know that so many folks recognize the light that he started shining, and decided to carry it on in our own community.

The community was invited to sign the door, leaving their name or a personal message that will live on within the Habitat for Humanity organization.

"This door symbolizes the opportunities he's given to people around the world, to open the door for opportunity for health, wealth, stability.  To have these walls go back into a home symbolizes his legacy. We can build something one hammer and one nail at a time," said Steve Daniels, the executive director of the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity.

The memorial will be on display in center court at the Arnot Mall until Monday, January 13th.  From there, it will be included in a new Habitat for Humanity build.
