Chemung Couple Charged with Animal Cruelty

CHEMUNG, NY (WENY) -- A Chemung County couple is charged with six counts of animal cruelty, after several farm animals were discovered in very bad shape.
New York State police investigating a call for a suspicious condition around 6PM on Monday, January 6th. Troopers discovered a stock trailer with a horse and five pigs parked in a wooded area near Simkin Road and Passmore Road.
Elmira Animal Control was called to the scene, and said the animals were in very serious condition. One pig in the trailer was dead, and the horse was emaciated. Authorities say the horse was humanely euthanized, and the pigs were taken to the Elmira Animal Shelter for evaluation and treatment.
Elmira Animal Control has charged Nickolas and Kelly Stevens of Chemung with six counts of Cruelty to Animals, a class A misdemeanor that carries a penalty of a $1,000 fine, one year in jail or both.
Both Stevens were issued appearance tickets for the town of Chemung court.
