President Joe Biden announced this morning he would block U.S. Steel— a company in Pittsburgh— from being sold to Japan based Nippon steel.

The steel companies have been in sales talks for over a year.

Both President Biden and President Elect Donald Trump said they oppose the sale, along with the U.S. Steel worker's union.

Governor Josh Shapiro responded to Biden's decision to block the sale.

"As next steps play out and as I have expressed directly to U.S. Steel leadership,” Shapiro said, "I expect U.S. Steel to uphold their commitments to Western Pennsylvania, refrain from threatening the jobs and livelihoods of the Pennsylvanians who work at the Mon Valley Works and at U.S. Steel HQ and their families, and work collaboratively to ensure the future of American steel making takes place right here in our Commonwealth."

Pennsylvania Republicans from across the state responded with frustration with the President’s decision.

"His actions suggest he doesn’t understand the difference between an adversary like China and an ally like Japan,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser (Pennsylvania-R). "This shortsighted move risks thousands of current good-paying union jobs, halts critical investments in modernizing steel plants, and undermines a plan to create nearly 6,000 new jobs over the next several years."

The AP reports that Nippon Steel has threatened to sue over President Biden’s block. Biden’s decision comes after a committee of lawmakers in December gave no final answer on if the sale of the U.S. owned steel company to a foreign based company would pose a national security threat.
