New York Provides $6.5 Billion in Food Assistance Through SNAP in 2024
(WENY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York delivered nearly $6.5 billion in food assistance to low-income residents in 2024 through the federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP.) The program supports nearly 3 million New Yorkers monthly, including families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Households receiving SNAP benefits averaged $376 per month, helping cover the cost of food. Hochul emphasized that SNAP is New York's most effective tool to combat hunger; she calls on Congress to maintain funding.
"No parent or caregiver should have to choose between buying groceries or keeping the lights on," says Hochul.
In addition to addressing food insecurity, SNAP generates economic benefits. Every dollar spent creates $1.54 in economic activity.
