Getting Ready to Say Goodbye: Sorge's Closing Their Doors in Under Two Days
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- After 73 years, one of Corning's most iconic restaurants is going to say goodbye after their final dinner on Tuesday, December 31st. Sorge's on Market Street is not only known for their food but also for surviving the flood of 1972 and a devastating fire in December 2008.
The announcement about the restaurant closing came in early December when the owners Mike and Chris Sorge shared its time for them to wrap up this chapter, and begin their next adventure.
In a short conversation, Mike Sorge tells WENY News you don't realize the impact you had on a community until it's time to say goodbye.
"We have certainly left a mark on the community and you don't realize the mark that you've left until word gets out that you're retiring. And we've gotten many, many great comments from the community as to how, how much will be missed. But it's time we need to. As we entered into our 70s, we've realized it's time to move on, move to the next chapter of our lives. But uh, we know how much we've been appreciated, but it's time to. We've been appreciated, but it's time to move on," says Sorge.
While they're closed on Monday, December 30th, they will reopen to a fully booked last dinner on New Year's Eve. While your last chance to dine in or take out may now be gone, the Sorge's are inviting the community down to say thank you and goodbye on Saturday, January 4th from 3-6 p.m.
