Trump Endorses Johnson in Speakership Race
WASHINGTON, D.C. - President-Elect Donald Trump is supporting Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R- LA) to continue as Speaker in the new congress.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Johnson is “a good, hard working, religious man” and that he has his complete and total endorsement. Trump also added that there will be a lot of policies he wants to address and that Johnson will continue to work on policies important to the president.
Leading up to the new congress, which begins in a couple of days, it was unclear if Trump supported Johnson for another term as Speaker after Trump helped strike down Johnson's bipartisan spending deal to avert a government shutdown.
We asked some representatives before they took off for the holidays if they supported Johnson.
“Speaker Johnson has my full support,” said Rep. Glenn Thompson (R- PA). “My full support. He has – he has worked tirelessly and hard and in a principled manner and he has my support going in.”
The House is set to hold their Speaker elections once they return to congress in early January. With a narrow Republican-controlled margin in the House, Johnson needs all the support he can get to win back the gavel.
