Elmira Fire Department Sets New Record for Calls in 2024

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- As 2024 winds down, Elmira Fire Chief Andrew Mallow says the department has set a record for the number of calls handled in a single year. As of 3:15 p.m. on Friday, December, 27th, the department has responded to 5,121 calls; the highest in its history.
This marks a steady increase over the last decade shared by Mallow. The department handled 4,911 calls in 2023, 4,963 calls in 2022, and 3,581 calls back in 2014. Chief Mallow notes the rise is consistent across the board, with both Emergency Services (EMS) and fire-related calls increasing at a similar rate.
Looking ahead to 2025, Chief Mallow is urging residents to prioritize safety year-round. His advice includes:
- Check smoke detectors regularly to ensure they're functioning
- Have two exits or available means in your home at all times
- Create and practice a family escape plan
- Only use UL-approved extension cords and surge protectors.
- Keep your home tidy and store flammable materials in safe areas
- Charge electric bikes and scooters away from exits, preferably in an outbuilding
