ALBANY, NY (WENY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed a legislative package aimed at enhancing protections for consumers' personal data, particularly during the holiday season when fraudulent activity is at an all-time high.

The package includes requirements for social media platforms to disclose their terms of service and for increased transparency in moderating harmful content, such as hate speech.

Additional measures expand identity theft protections to include medical and insurance data.

The package also enforces stronger cybersecurity measures for government-procured devices.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Hochul explained:

"With this legislative package, we are taking bold action to hold companies accountable, strengthen protections, and give consumers the transparency and security they need and deserve. My administration will continue to lead the fight to protect privacy, combat fraud, and ensure every New Yorker can live and work with confidence in an increasingly digital world."
