Bells, Bags and Santa Suits: Arctic League Spreads Christmas Cheer in Elmira
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Christmas magic filled the streets of Elmira this morning as the Arctic League kicked off its annual toy delivery. The goal is to ensure every child in the community wakes up with a smile on Christmas morning.
At 9 a.m. sharp, the iconic bell rang out, signaling the start of the grand holiday tradition. Volunteers, cars lined with gifts, and even a few Santa hats were all part of the festive scene.
"We are here to deliver toys," says Volunteer Tammy O'Dell.
For the Arctic League Director of Distribution Mike Robertson, this morning was a culmination of months of planning and hard work.
"If it was a fireworks show, this would be the grand finale of a huge effort that goes on for months and months here at the Arctic League Donations, packing and now, finally, delivery to make sure that no kid goes without Christmas," shared Robertson.
It's a tradition that stretches back decades, and for volunteers like Lynn Thomas, it's a family affair. Dressed head-to-toe as Santa Claus, Thomas brought a little extra cheer to the chilly morning.
"I've been doing this for about 20 years," shared Thomas. "My dad started it when I was a kid and then I got back into it after I got out of the military. I just started doing the Santa suit maybe four or five years ago, so I enjoy it. "
This year, 1,484 gifts were packed and ready for delivery to 1,487 families. Each one wrapped with care, and a little love, thanks to months of preparation.
"In the times that we're having right now, with people with so many so hard to pay for everything, that the community still supports this organization," says Karen Ring, Board Director with the Arctic League. "It's just so amazing and to see all the people coming to pick up the bags, to deliver year after year. It's a family tradition, just like it is for us."
That's the magic of the Arctic League; bringing together neighbors, friends, and families to keep the Christmas spirit alive for every child.
