ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Chemung County has received a $10 million grant from New York State to go towards the Sewer Consolidation Project.

Over the summer, Chemung County announced plans to close the Lake Street Wastewater Treatment Plant to move the operation to the facility on Milton St. The goal is to consolidate the two facilities into one located in Southport. According to Chemung County Executive Chris Moss, the sewage system is decades old and is something that's been overlooked for a long time.

The Lake Street Wastewater Treatment Plant is 62 years old and the Milton Street Wastewater Treatment Plant is 37 years old.

The consolidation project is expected to be done by 2026. The initiative will cost the county over $275 million dollars.

The funding from the state is coming from New York's Department of Environmental Conservation's Water Quality Improvement Project grant program.
