ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira City School District voters approved a $139 million Capitol Improvement Project on Tuesday. The plan passed in a 415-81 vote, according to the district.

The projects include upgrades to every school building in the district. Classrooms, athletic facilities, the bus garage and maintenance buildings will all see improvements. School cooling systems, playgrounds and even roofs are expected to be upgraded.

Officials say the vote now paves the way for significant improvements to school district facilities and infrastructure.

"This vote represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to enhance district facilities and provide the best possible environment for our students. We are excited to move forward and begin these important improvements that will have a lasting positive impact on our community,” said Hillary Austin, Superintendent of the Elmira City School District.

Elmira City School District expects New York to provide $119 million in aid, while the district will contribute $20 million to the project.

Official designs for the project will be finalized in January 2025, with an estimated completion date in 2030.
