Sorge's Restaurant to Close at the End of the Year

CORNING, NY (WENY) -- After close to three quarters of a century, a landmark restaurant on Corning's Market Street will close its doors.
In a post on Facebook Monday night, the owners of Sorge's Restaurant said it is time to retire. The restaurant will close at the end of December. It opened on June 5, 1951, and expanded in 1962, and again in 1968.
Sorge's is one of the longest-standing businesses in Corning. It survived a devastating fire in December of 2008, that completely destroyed the building. The restaurant rebuilt, and reopened to customers in 2010. The restaurant also previously survived a prior fire, and the flood of 1972.
In the Facebook post, owners Mike and Chris Sorge say it's time to focus on what's next.
"It is with a mixture of heartfelt gratitude and bittersweet emotions that we announce the final chapter of Sorge's Restaurant. After much thought, deliberation and consultation with our family we have made the decision that it is time for us to retire. We feel that we now must move on to the next stage of our lives together!" the post reads.
An exact closing date was not disclosed.
