The 40th Annual Dickens of a Christmas in Wellsboro celebrates the holiday season and togetherness
WELLSBORO, P.A. (WENY) -- The air was cold and parking spaces were scarce but, that didn't stop people from filling Main Street in Wellsboro on Saturday for the 40th Annual Dickens of a Christmas.
Over 160 vendors and performers helped bring the Victorian Era to life to celebrate the holiday season from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
"We just really enjoy bringing joy to everybody that's here, and we see a lot of smiles as we go through the day," said Margo Slichter, a singer in the Seasonal Singers group.
Like the Seasonal Singers, various performers spread out at different spots on each block to show off their acting, singing, and instrumental talents. Dozens of acts were offered for people to check out at their leisure. Many of them have performed at Dickens of a Christmas previously and enjoy coming back annually for one big reason.
"The people in Wellsboro," said Tim Swan, a bagpipe player from the Caledonian Highlanders out of Big Flats. "The people, they're just fantastic. They help each other out. I got a free cup of coffee because it was cold and they're very complimenting and just enjoy me being here. That makes me want to come every year."
Of course, guests and performers wore their best Victorian holiday clothes and strutted about their way.
There were even a few appearances by one special guest, Santa Claus.
"Merry Christmas to everyone," said an attendee. "I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and you get everything you wished for. Merry Christmas!"
Another attendee, Todd Crumb, was also quite excited about the Christmas icon coming to Dickens of Christmas as well as the rest of the day's festivities.
"I'm excited, about around five o'clock they're going to be lighting the tree up there and Santa Claus is going to be on the fire truck later on tonight," said Crumb.
For some families who came to the event, Dickens of a Christmas is considered a beloved tradition. Ian, Lisa, and Michael shared that their family has had roots in the area for decades and has come to the event for many years. They say Dickens of a Christmas is a great way to bring people together.
When asked what his favorite part of the event was, Michael said, "Honestly, seeing them all so happy. It's just a great time with family. So, I'm happy to be here."
Attendees were also able to indulge in a great selection of food and sweet treats. Holiday shopping, however, was the biggest hit.
Several attendees agreed that it's the people and the entertainment that make Dickens of a Christmas so special year after year.
