Catholic Charities' Elmira Community Kitchen ensures community members are not without a Thanksgiving meal
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Volunteers at Catholic Charities' Elmira Community Kitchen believe that no one should go without a Thanksgiving meal. On Thursday afternoon, they worked to bring Thanksgiving food staples to people in need.
No one was left out as the gravy flowed and plates were served during Thanksgiving Dinner at the Elmira Community Kitchen. Doors were open from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. on the holiday.
Volunteers worked in an assembly-line style to make dinner plates. They added turkey, stuffing, potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, and a dinner roll to each one. After the big meal was done, the pumpkin pie came out, and guests were also offered a few alternative dessert options.
However, it was the spirit of the volunteers that not only brought food to their guests but also comfort and a sense of community. They made sure to talk to everyone there.
This Thanksgiving Dinner has been a tradition for the kitchen since 1981. But in 2024, people of all ages stepped up to help out.
Mary Churchill, today's dining room host, says she hopes today's event helps to pass on the spirit of volunteerism among future generations.
"Some of these people come here not because they need to, but because they want to, and this provides a social event for them," said Churchill. "They know each other and I think...volunteer spirit in America is something that needs to be celebrated all the time."
Churchill says many guests told volunteers they were glad they came. As for volunteers, some told Churchill they had never been a part of an operation like this and would be happy to do it again.
If you would like to contribute and help volunteer during the holiday season or during any other time of the year, you can check out Catholic Charities' website. They are actively in need of extra volunteer help. You can also aid in a different way.
"Donors are much needed at this point in time because of cutbacks and the inflationary crisis of today," said Churchill. "Anybody interested in donating to this kitchen and this effort can just mail a check to Catholic Charities, the community kitchen, 215 East Church Street, Elmira, 14801. We would be grateful for any donations to further our efforts to service those who are in need of it."
