Elmira man running 100 miles to raise awareness about veteran suicide
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- In Elmira, one man is on a mission to help raise awareness for a cause that is near and dear to his heart. His goal is to run 100 miles by December 14th, to help raise awareness and stop veteran suicides.
"It was incredible. I wouldn't trade a second of it," said Michael Manwaring, when talking about his time in the service. "I think that my life is definitely better because of it."
Manwaring served in the Army Reserves for 20 years. Now retired from the service, his mission to help his fellow veterans is still ongoing. Manwaring has set a goal to run 100 miles by December 14th. Mile by mile, he's raising money for Stop Soldier Suicide, a non-profit that aims to drive veteran suicide rates down. Stop Soldier Suicide says veterans are at 72% higher risk for suicide than those who haven't served.
"I'm a veteran too, and so when another veteran is struggling, it feels like a family member of mine is struggling," remarked Manwaring. "When it comes to PTSD, you don't always know what the answer is, or how to help [veterans]. So, I'm doing this to try to raise some money for the people who are looking for those answers, and actively trying to help."
Manwaring is sharing his running journey online each day, documenting his progress for the community. He said he is hoping to drum up support and awareness.
"I hope that it'll raise awareness for this specifically and help raise more money, but, in addition to that, I hope that my example will inspire others to get involved in something that they care about," said Manwaring.
As of November 27th, Manwaring has run 35 miles towards his goal. To follow along with his progress, or to donate towards the cause, click here.
