ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Thanksgiving is just a short time away, and many local communities are starting to get into the holiday spirit.  That includes the City of Elmira, where Elmira Downtown Development held the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday in Wisner Park to kick off the festivities.

"Elmira Downtown Development loves hosting this.Every year.  It brings the community down, and it's a sweet, simple event. Santa comes, the reindeer come. We love it and we couldn't do it without the City of Elmira Building and Grounds Department, and our sponsors really," said Kylene Kiah, the Executive Director of Elmira Downtown Development.

Elmira Downtown Development aims to bring the community together by putting on some free events throughout the city.  The Cantata Signers set the mood with songs of the season, performing while people enjoyed hot cocoa and met reindeer.  Some say its special to be able to perform for the community in this way.

"Its a lot of fun singing.  You make lots of great friends when you sing, being able to work together and make beautiful music, and see the people you are singing to enjoy it, its so much fun," said Barry Winters, a member of the Cantata Singers.

The night ended with a visit from Santa.  The tree lighting ceremony was fun for the whole family, revolving around lights, music, and cheer.

"Happy Holidays!" said seven-year-old Adelyne.

Elmira Downtown Development is holding the Holiday Parade on Friday, November 29th at 10 a.m. starting on West Water Street.
